Gilgamesh – London
Who would have ever thought Camden could be this cool and trendy? I arrived with a group of friends at Camden’s Stables Market. It is a place where the most INTERESTING people in the world go. Stables Market has so much to offer to people of all ages and tastes. From amazing vintage clothes to antiques, it is a great and unusual place to shop. In this urban town, one of London’s top and trendy restaurants can be found, Gilgamesh.
Whoever enters the exotic world of Gilgamesh is considered lucky. Heading up the escalators into the restaurant is like entering a completely different world; it definitely takes you far away from the urban feel of Camden below.
As an ostentatious, replica Babylonian palace boasting custom designed, hand-carved furniture on an epic scale, Gilgamesh is one of the largest restaurants in London. The restaurant offers pan Asian food that will ROCK your taste buds.
Their selections of maki roles were impeccable. Being a tuna fan, we ordered the Crispy spicy tuna roll, which had spicy mayonnaise and cucumbers. I never tried tuna and cucumber before, but I thought the combination was fabulous. Mr. Chang was also a great roll, consisting of prawn tempura, lettuce, spicy mayonnaise, and teriyaki sauce. Although the ingredients in each of the rolls were simple, they tasted superb.
We loved their salads. We had three salads and they were all so good. The Aubergine salad aka eggplant came with shallots, mint, basil, coriander with green chilli garlic, coriander dressing and peanuts (WOW). The Avocado and Lobster salad was another epic. But my fave salad was the Duck and Watermelon salad, which consisted of crispy duck, watermelon, cashew nuts, mint, and Thai basil sweet sauce. You are probably thinking how can someone eat duck and watermelon, I don’t blame you. At first those were my thoughts exactly but after tasting this terrific salad I kept telling myself WHY NOT EAT WATERMELON AND DUCK?
For main, we had a couple of curry dishes such as the vegetarian curry and the Thai chicken curry which were good. One came with a side of Jasmine rice and the other with vegetable fried rice. The miso Chilean sea bass, marinated with sweet plum miso sauce is one of their greatest dishes too. The fish was cooked perfectly, very tender and buttery.
For dessert, we only had room for their famous fruit platter. This platter was very different from other fruit plates I’ve seen before because it only featured EXOTIC fruits that you won’t be able to find at your regular supermarket. The fruits were presented exquisitely on an amazing plate.
This place oozes character. With Babylonian and Asian decor, you will certainly feel like you’re somewhere special!
