I usually  don’t listen to peoples suggestions when it comes to fine dining, especially coming from Kuwaiti definition of ‘fine dining’. As i grow older, and work more and more with different types of food as well as travel, I try to educate myself with different types of cuisines, and decided to try something new every time; food i would never of eaten prior to my journey. Never asking for extra sauce, or without this, or add that, just ordering the food as it is, and experiencing a chefs art.

La petite Maison is a sister restaurant to ZUMA which I  considerone of the best restaurants in the world, so someone who can establish a restaurant like Zuma and owns a french restaurant with such an endearing name “La Petit Maison’ meaning ‘The Small House’  should be amazing.

When i asked the operation manager of Zuma Dubai about the place, he simply said “It will be the freshest food you will ever try.”

I was eager to go, and after my first visit, i was hooked. Ordering literally the whole menu ( not an exageration) I challenged myself to eat everything; loving some dishes and others, although fresh, weren’t to my personal liking.

First of all when someone thinks of French cuisine you ultimately think CHEESE. Though im not a cheese person, i kept getting suggestions to order the burrata, my friend suggested i order two; one for my left hand and another for my right!

Well, get this. The day i ordered the buratta, i ended up ordering three. One for my right, one for my left and one to share with the wife. Thats how amazing the buratta  buffalo cheese was. Its as fresh as it gets, topped with tomatoes, basil leaves.

The crab lobster salad was simply one of the best salads ever with an amazing flavor and after taste that you wana have the whole day.

I also ordered the Aburgine which is eggplant and of course it was something really different and the eggplant was so fresh and huge and full of yummy flavors and tangs with prawn and tomato paste on top.

Next is the warm prawn with olive oil! Speaking of the olive oil, lets take a moment and give the green goodness a standing ovation. The oil they use to cook is also at the table, simply one of the best olive oils I’ve tried; thought of actually drinking it. Yes. Its that good.

Moving onto the entrees…

When i see a baby chicken anywhere i just go crazy! so offcourse ordered it. It looks like a chicken but it was lighter than a feather , u cant tell which part is which that means its super tender.

The sole fish, which is one of their signature dishes, was superb.

The rib eye and lamb chops are both amazing but always order it medium other wise u wont get the right taste. With  whatever i decide to order, i have to order the potato gratine, a side dish that’s creamy and goes well with

Thinking i wasn’t going to be impressed with the dessert because of how good the food was, i was definitely proved wrong.

From their fresh warm chocolate soufle, oozing with chocolate goodness to their creamy creme brulee, i fell in love with La Petite Maison even more.

The only two negative things about this place are their pastas and service. Both are average, or  the service sucks more, still not sure.

Kuweat there. Seriously.

Terrace grill is a place that reminds me of my teenage years, the place I went to with my parents instead of peacock for a Friday lunch with the family. The memories I have of this place are superb in terms of food, atmosphere, and good times with everyone in my family. A steak house located in JW Marriot-Salheya, was one of the first “fine dining” restaurants that we know of in Kuwait.

I hardly ever get amazed by steak houses in Kuwait, so I went to terrace grill hoping it would amaze me and live up to the memories I have. Since I was in a steak house, I ordered Carpaccio as an appetizer; bland and completely tasteless. Nothing special nor innovative. The tempura I ordered next was as disappointing as the Carpaccio; soggy enough to make me want to forget about eating there again. However I did manage to convince myself to order a steak, since that was the purpose of the meal. I went for a standard fillet-medium which came out quite good but still, not the quality I was hoping. The fillet came next to a bed of frozen french-fries which I couldn’t believe since I was paying quite a bit for a “gourmet” meal. Overall, I wouldn’t go again. I was paying 30kd a person for what should have been 10 kd; in terms of quality.

I was certainly disappointed at what terrace grill had to offer. I really do hope they would refresh and do something innovative and pay attention to quality of their food. They’re catering to a more educated people in terms of food, and they certainly have more competition than they used to.

I’ve been waiting for one of my most favorite casual restaurants to open in Kuwait, Carluccio’s, and it did! I first tried it in Dubai Mall, and later in Pearl, Doha. The first branch was located in London right behind Selfridges. Their concept is basic: Authentic Italian food. What I love about them is they sell their own products, and boast their recipes by sharing them with everyone to enjoy at home.

A new location in Avenues mall was very well executed in terms of design, and display of their wonderful sandwiches and pastries, with their every so famous market.

Their menu in the gulf is different from London; they have an audience to target, and everyone knows how many global restaurants and franchises have altered their ingredients to adapt to the local taste.

We started off with the Carpaccio, the thinnest sliced beef you will ever have at a restaurant. Though the beef was tender and fresh, I prefer seasoned Carpaccio to plane Carpaccio salads. I later tried a new item on the menu: fried riceballs stuffed with Bolognese and cheese which was very pleasing, definitely a thumbs up!

Believe it or not, the never order pasta at Italian restaurants, the only type of pasta I like is Gnocci. I always choose signature dishes that are creative and are bursting with flavor. So, I ordered the mighty Ossuboku: a juicy tender lamb shank on a bed of saffron risotto. The branch in Kuwait though didn’t satisfy my meat crave. The shank wasn’t as tender as I had hoped, but I’d still order it again!

I loved it overall, but both Avenues branch and Dubai cannot be compared to the quality of the Doha branch.
